Combining methods from contemporary poetry, and lyrical works, this session develops skills within wordcraft, rhyming techniques, devising lyrical ideas, expressing yourself creatively .
Rhyming techniques focus intensely on structure, and also using replacement words instead of repeating the same word, this in turn develops ones vocabulary further. Structure and format are the stepping stones of lyrical craft. In this session we teach formats such as:
- A,B,A Format and coinciding alphabetic formats, also free writing, (where a lyric is still structured but requires no rhyming techniques or standard format)
- Devising lyrical ideas: this can be done in a variety of ways, depending on the group the angle of approach may vary, but the outline is the same.
Firstly, we aim to plan something to write about, this isn’t as easy as it sounds, so a group mind mapping session is in order, after forming a basic theory of a song, (this can be something as small as the title, or as big as the main story) its then time to put the song into structure and order.
Another useful way to devise ideas, is to get each group member to create one line of a lyrical work, and then pass that same line across to another who will evaluate on the previous line and extend the work.
Finally self-expression and creativity matter the most when it comes to lyrical craft, within lyric writing there is a freedom to express anything you feel without obstruction.
